Fire Escape
“Fire Escape,” 8 x 6 inches, oil on panel, 2022
Julie Webb’s original oil painting, “Fire Escape,” was painted from the window of her street level apartment when she began writing her debut album. She painted the window view once from deep within her room, and again from the window sill. For the second attempt, she displayed the first rendering in the window sill, and painted its reflection in the glass. The reflection contained all the layers from the outside as well. Sometimes the fire escape is the last resort, like when Julie left through the screen door of her prior apartment. But this time, “Fire Escape” is only an end result. And you know what they say about endings… Julie later drew inspiration from “Fire Escape” to write the lyrics for the bridge of her debut single, 2:22: “When I left for the station, I took the fire escape. I wasn’t running late, I was only feeling brave. And now it’s 2:22…”
